The Building Officials’ Association of BC is an Association of over 600 members primarily representing local government Building Officials and those involved in building design, construction, testing and research. The BOABC fulfills the same objectives as were proposed at its inception in 1954: Consistent Code interpretation; A forum for discussion; Education for Building Officials; Awareness of the standards of Code knowledge; and since 1981, a technical certification program for its membership.
The Association has very lofty objectives and when we were asked to design their site in 2002, we knew we had a lot to live up to. And with such a broad range of objectives, that meant for a wealth of content that needed to be displayed in a clear, easy-to-navigate website.
The site needed to present relevant Interpretations and Guidelines and all up-to-date legislation that pertained to the BOABC. Upcoming certification and exam schedules, as well as applications for building officials, was also information the BOABC wanted to ensure was promoted on the website. Furthermore, the site also needed to showcase province-wide job listings, a quarterly newsletter, a comprehensive list of bylaws and an online store. Phew!
By strategically planning an intricate site map prior to designing the site, we were able to create a navigation system that allowed for information to be found in a straightforward manner. With that piece of the puzzle completed, it gave us more time to create the crisp design that remains online today.
